BARES ANCHORAGE | |
Description | The first mention of the port of Bares would appear to be in a document from 916, for King Ordoño II. The port is near Cape Estaca de Bares, the separation between the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. However, its existence as a town and as a port goes back many centuries before that. Phoenician coins and amphoras have been found there, and also a Roman necropolis, which along with the pre-Roman harbour, all point to this being a place of great demographic and commercial importance. |
